In his research, Rautava and his team asked 241 pregnant women were randomly assigned to the probiotic and placebo powder without bacteria. All respondents were women with a history of allergy so that their infants at high risk of suffering from eczema and other allergic reactions.
The participants were asked to consume the drink for two months at the end of two months of pregnancy and lactation. The researchers then followed the health of their infants until the age of two years to see whether there is a skin rash.
At the end of the study, 71 percent of infants in the placebo group experienced eczema at least once, compared with 29 percent of the group infants of mothers who received probiotics.
However, at the age of two years there was no difference in sensitivity to allergens children, including milk, flour, soy, or animal. Approximately a quarter of children who tested "skin prick" or allergen sensitivity test result was positive.
