Actually what is leukemia? Can this disease be cured? Doctor Dr. dr. Lugyanti Sukrisman, SpPD-KHOM of the Division of Hematology-Okologi Medical Department of Medicine Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, explained about this disease.
There are several types of leukemia. In general, leukemia is grouped by how fast the cell will be bad and type of white blood cell that affect. Leukemia can be acute or chronic leukemia.
Acute leukemia will cause the patient to feel pain quickly. Rapidly deteriorating circumstances, even in a matter of weeks. While chronic leukemia, does not cause symptoms in people over the years and gradually worsened. Patients have a longer life expectancy, even up to 5 years.
Judging from the type, leukemia can be divided into four:
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): ALL affects lymphoid cells and grows quickly. Every year, more than 5,000 new cases of leukemia of this type. ALL is most common in children, but do not rule affects adults.
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML): AML affects myeloid cells and grows quickly. Every year, more than 13,000 new cases of leukemia of this kind. This disease occurs in adults and children.
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL): CLL affects lymphoid cells and usually grow slowly. Every year, more than 15,000 new cases of leukemia of this kind. Most often, people diagnosed with the disease over the age of 55. This type almost never affects children.
Chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML): CML affects myeloid cells and usually grow slowly at first. Every year, found nearly 5,000 new cases of leukemia of this kind. CML especially menyangkiti adults.
