Kidney stone disease, including quite a lot of sufferers. Kidney stones are formed from lumps of calcium, magnesium, and uric acid. Some foods are known also can trigger the formation of kidney stones.
One food that is known to trigger kidney stones are green vegetables. Yes, a healthy diet rich in vitamins and fiber also contain high amounts of oxalate.
Eating too many foods high in oxalate will increase the amount of oxalate in the urine, which binds with calcium in the urine to form calcium oxalate kidney stones.
Green leafy vegetables that contain oxalates include kale, beet greens, chard, spinach, nuts, cocoa powder, wheat bran, and soy.
"It is not known for sure the link between kidney stones and vegetables kale, but more and more healthy people who present with kidney stones. Kidney stones can also be caused by the consumption of foods high in protein," said Mantu Gupta, MD, director of the Kidney Stone Center at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Animal protein will collect a lot of salt and acids into the urine, which can lead to the appearance of stone. This is why people who have a vegetarian and vegan diet is more rarely experienced kidney stones, despite eating a lot of vegetables.
In addition there are also other factors that affect the appearance of kidney stones among others, that lineage, obesity, and lack of magnesium.
Urologist, Philip Buffington, MD said, one of the best ways to reduce the risk of kidney stone formation is to reduce the intake of foods high in oxalate. But that does not mean you have to eliminate the intake of vegetables daily, but only limited intake.
"To fight oxalate levels and inhibit stone formation, the most important thing to do is enough water consumption, reduce the intake of table salt, and add the juice (such as lemons or oranges) in beverages to reduce animal protein," Buffington said.
Gupta also recommend the consumption of foods rich in calcium and oxalate simultaneously, as both will bind in the stomach and intestines, so do not settle in the kidneys and urine.
"Drink a glass of milk or yogurt as a companion of the food you eat," he suggested.
